Job Summary Security Corporals supervise the daily workflow and assignments of security officers. They evaluate and assess performance to ensure proper training and compliance with applicable policies and regulations. They also perform basic and advanced-level Security Officer duties. The Chief Safety Officer (CSO) serves as chief of Police Services and oversees the University’s Department of Public Safety, including University Police, Campus Security, Health Security, Emergency Management, Emergency Communications, and the Office of the CSO. Responsibilities Provide a security presence on Main Campus locations. Patrol campus premises to deter criminal activity and enhance safety of students, staff, and faculty. Write reports of irregularities or incidents, including equipment or property damage, propped or unlocked doors, and other safety concerns. Request police or other emergency services in situations such as fire, disturbances, or medical emergencies. Escort or drive vehicles to patrol assigned area and/or transport individuals. Provide vehicle boosts and other motorist assistance services. Unlock university buildings as required and secure property by locking buildings. Supervise Security Officers—mentoring, disciplinary action, scheduling, training, etc. (list not exhaustive). Replace absentee officers on each shift and schedule additional staff for special coverage. Ensure officers provide complete and accurate reports and paperwork. Assist in emergency management. Maintain a professional demeanor during stressful situations. Adhere to University of Utah Department of Public Safety and university policies. Work any shift, including days off, weekends, and holidays. Work in inclement or extreme weather conditions. Possibly work confined to a service vehicle for an entire shift. Maintain required training, all of which will be provided by the department. Work Environment and Level of Frequency Often: Office environment, outdoor environment, extreme cold, extreme heat, sufficient noise to require shouting above noise level, exposure to animals, atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation. Seldom: Exposure to oils or other cutting fluids. Physical Requirements Nearly continuously: Hearing, listening, walking. Often: Sitting, repetitive hand motion, repetitive foot motion, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling, balancing, reaching overhead, pulling, pushing, lifting – up to 50 pounds, lifting – over 50 pounds. Minimum Qualifications Two years of security experience, or equivalency (one year of education can substitute for two years of related work experience). Ability to stand and walk for eight hours. Valid Utah Driver’s License to be obtained within six months of hire. Ability to pass an extensive background check required. On‑call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Demonstrated human relation skills and working knowledge of radio codes and regulations. Commitment to provide excellent customer service. Preferences Preference may be given to individuals with 2–3 years of professional security experience. Preference may be given to individuals with CPR, AED, or First Aid certifications. Preference may be given to individuals experienced with Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, CCure, Avigilon, and RMS. Preference may be given to individuals familiar with radio communications.
