Position Summary
Morrison Center is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Controller to lead all aspects of the organizations financial operations. This key leadership role is responsible for the oversight of Finance, Compliance, and select administrative functions, ensuring regulatory compliance, promoting sound fiscal management, and supporting strategic decision-making across the organization.
The Controller plays a critical role in maintaining financial integrity, supporting program and grant operations, and guiding the organization through growth and transformation. This is an opportunity for a proven finance professional to join a collaborative, purpose-driven leadership team.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Direct daily financial operations and ensure alignment with best practices in nonprofit fiscal management
- Lead cash flow planning and forecasting in coordination with program leadership
- Develop, implement, and monitor financial policies and internal control systems
Accounting and Reporting
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date general ledger and financial records
- Prepare and analyze monthly and annual financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports
- Deliver timely and actionable financial reports to internal stakeholders and external partners
Payroll and Benefits
- Oversee payroll processing and benefits administration in partnership with Human Resources
- Ensure compliance with employment tax regulations and accurate maintenance of payroll records
- Coordinate reporting requirements related to benefit plans and assist in benefits-related audits
Compliance and Audit
- Provide oversight of the Compliance team to ensure adherence to nonprofit GAAP and applicable regulatory standards
- Lead preparation for annual audits and liaise with external auditors
- Oversee Medicaid/MaineCare billing and reporting processes to ensure compliance with federal and state requirements
- Collaborate with billing and program staff to ensure proper documentation, allowable cost practices, and ongoing compliance
Grant and Contract Management
- Manage financial aspects of grants and contracts, including budgeting, reporting, and tracking of restricted funds
- Partner with program leaders to align spending with funder requirements and reporting timelines
Strategic Financial Planning
- Provide leadership with financial insights and analysis to support strategic initiatives
- Contribute to organization-wide budget development and long-range financial forecasting
- Recommend policy changes to promote sustainability and operational efficiency
Team Leadership
- Supervise and mentor Finance, Compliance, and administrative support staff
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance culture
- Support staff development and conduct regular performance evaluations
Risk Management
- Identify and mitigate financial and operational risks
- Maintain robust internal control frameworks to ensure financial and process integrity
- Assist in the development and review of risk management policies
Technology and Systems Support
- Provide administrative oversight of financial systems and technology infrastructure
- Coordinate technology budgeting and planning in collaboration with organizational leadership
External Relationships
- Serve as a financial liaison to external stakeholders, including banks, auditors, vendors, and funders
- Represent Morrison Centers financial interests with transparency and professionalism
Other Responsibilities
- Undertake additional projects or responsibilities as assigned by senior leadership
Qualifications
Education
- Masters degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
- MBA or active CPA licensure strongly preferred
- Additional nonprofit financial management training or certification is considered a plus
Experience
- Extensive experience in progressive finance and accounting leadership roles, ideally within the nonprofit sector
- Demonstrated success in a senior finance, Controller, or equivalent role
- Expertise in grant accounting, audit management, compliance oversight, and nonprofit reporting standards
- Working knowledge of Medicaid/MaineCare billing and reporting strongly preferred
- Familiarity with healthcare or human services funding models is advantageous
