Job Description

Position Overview The University of Kansas School of Music is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor – Artist – Teacher of Cello. This position will teach applied cello lessons (undergraduate and graduate) and related courses, build and maintain a strong cello studio, work individually and collaboratively in recruiting music performance, music education, and music therapy students, supervise and mentor teaching assistants, and serve on graduate and faculty committees. The successful candidate will establish a research/creative agenda and participate actively in the cultural and intellectual life of the School and the University, and will help advance the School’s reputation for excellence. The School of Music offers professional training through baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degree programs and is a charter member of the National Association of Schools of Music. Job Description Teaching 40% Teach applied cello lessons (undergraduate and graduate) and related courses Build and maintain a strong cello studio Supervise/mentor teaching assistants Teach additional music major and/or non‑major courses in the candidate’s area of expertise (please suggest potential courses in your letter of interest) Research/Creative Activity – 40% Establish a research/creative agenda that promotes artistic growth and an expanding reputation of excellence Participate actively in the cultural and intellectual life of the School and the University Service – 20% Recruit music performance, music education, and music therapy students individually and collaboratively Support the School of Music and the University cooperatively Serve on graduate and faculty committees Required Qualifications Doctoral degree in music by the start of appointment; OR a master’s degree in music and seven years of applied, relevant experience. Demonstrated record of productive teaching excellence at the collegiate level or equivalent. Documented success as a cello artist/performer, as evidenced in application materials. This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.
